The verses of dedication and resolve in the translated printing, dedicating merit to a very wide list of beings.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the close of a period of practice or a ceremony; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.
Historical background
The same verses printed earlier in the book without a translation, here given with Thai beneath. The book spells the title with a doubled letter in both printings on the page, though its own contents page spells it with a single one.
At thirty-four units this printing is longer than the earlier one, because the Thai is set as its own units rather than beside the Pali.
Meaning and purpose
The dedication list is what the chant is remembered for and the Thai makes its reach unmistakable: preceptors, teachers, mother and father, kin; the sun, the moon, the king; brahmās, māras, indras, the guardians of the world; Yama, friends, the indifferent — and the hostile.
Then the resolve, which turns from the list to the speaker: may I swiftly come to the cutting off of craving and clinging, and may whatever base states are in my mind-stream perish, in birth after birth.
It closes by asking only that the māras find no opening. Not victory over them — room to keep working, which is how a great many chants in this book end.
