Strive and cut the stream of craving; discard sense-pleasures, O Brahmin. Without abandoning sense-pleasures, a silent sage does not attain onepointedness. If there is something to be done, do it; strive for it with firmness, for a slack ascetic life only scatters more dust of defilements. Better it is to leave a bad deed undone, as a bad deed causes suffering later; better it is to do a good deed, which, having been done, brings no regret. Just as Kusa grass, if grasped wrongly, cuts the hand, so the ascetic life, if practiced wrongly, drags one down to hell. Any action performed slackly, any vow that is corrupted, or a holy life led doubtfully-none of these yield great fruit.
