“Bhante, formerly, monks who had spent the rains retreat in the various directions would come to see the Tathāgata. We would gain the opportunity to see those monks who inspire the mind and to attend upon them. But, Bhante, after the Blessed One has passed away, we will no longer have the opportunity to see such inspiring monks or to attend upon them.

อิมานิ โข อานันทะ จัตตาริ สัทธัสสะ กุละปุตตัสสะ ทัสสะนียานิ สังเวชะนียานิ ฐานานิ.

These, Ānanda, are the four places that a faithful person should visit and look upon with reverence and spiritual urgency.

There will come, Ānanda, faithful monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen who will visit these places, saying: ‘Here the Tathāgata was born,’ ‘Here the Tathāgata attained enlightenment,’ ‘Here the Tathāgata set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma,’ and ‘Here the Tathāgata attained Parinibbāna.’
