“Ānanda, there are these eight causes and conditions for the occurrence of a great earthquake. What eight?

Here, Ānanda, the great earth rests upon water, the water rests upon air, and the air rests upon space. At a time when powerful winds blow, the winds stir the water; when the water is stirred, it shakes the earth. This is the first cause and condition for the occurrence of a great earthquake.

Again, Ānanda, there may be an ascetic or brahmin with spiritual power, mastery of mind, or a powerful deity of great might and influence. This is the second cause and condition for the occurrence of a great earthquake.
